How is cardiopulmonary VO2 max testing performed?

The testing will be performed on a treadmill with various pieces of equipment used to monitor your body’s response.

  • Neoprene face mask – monitors O2 intake andCO2 produced. Mask will be placed over the nose and mouth, but will not restrict breathing.
  • ECG – 10 electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart rate and rhythm.
  • Blood Pressure Cuff – measures resting blood pressure.

Baseline Measurements: Height, Weight, Body Mass Index, Blood Pressure, Resting ECG

Once baseline measurements have been completed and all parameters have been met, exercise will begin. While you are standing on the treadmill, the technician will explain the testing in further detail. You will begin with an easy warm up, followed up by increasing stages of difficulty. The workload will be adjusted accordingly throughout the stages. It is advised that each individual gives their best effort to ensure the most accurate results.

If your technician notes you are experiencing any symptoms or you feel you can no longer continue, then the exercise protocol will cease. Once the protocol is terminated, you will be asked to complete a cool down so they can continue to monitor your vitals.

Tips for success:

  • Eat a light meal a few hours before, and only water within the hour prior to testing.
  • Light or no exercise 24 hours prior to testing.
  • Give your best effort.
  • Always let your technician know if you’re experiencing any abnormal symptoms.

How long does a cardiopulmonary VO2 max test last?

Testing will take approximately an hour to complete from start to finish, which will include filling out your waivers, health history, patient preparation, exercise testing, and explanation of information. The actual testing portion which includes warm up, exercise, and cool down will take approximately 15 minutes with 3-4 minutes at your peak levels.
